Anime Go! 2017 & Beyond

This year has been a bit manic, especially with ECG to prepare for this summer I’ve kind of fallen off the wagon with updates.. hopefully I’ll fix that soon!

So what’s been happening?

Well, in March I returned to Anime Go! in Wallsend, where I helped organise the cosplay aspects of the event and gave two beginner talks: “Cosplay Talk” & “Choosing A Cosplay Costume”! They were really well received, with different tips for people getting started and what cosplay as a hobby can offer you.

As you can see, I wore Shallotte Elminus from Atelier Shallie which is always a nice costume to wear as it sparks a lot of conversation with people – I got lots of questions about the construction, which parts were bought/made, fabrics etc which makes it easy to explain to people who might be starting out as cosplayers.

The library is hoping to run Anime Go! again next year, which I should be helping out with again – hopefully making it bigger and better with even more fun stuff to do!

Otherwise I’ve been busy as a bee with prep for ECG this July! I’m going to put up a more thorough post about how the costume and preparation is going soon, but for now here’s a sneak peek of some of the materials and work I’ve been doing:

There is an awful lot to be done, but I’m optimistic I can get it all ready in time for the finals! I hope anyone attending enjoys my performance too. Til next time!

Blog Awards & Rai-Con Spring!

Long time no blog! Sorry for the radio silence, I’ve been pretty busy offline and also with preparing for events so it’s been a busy couple of months!

First off, this morning I discovered my blog has actually won an award! Feedspot did a “Top 75 Cosplay Websites & Blogs” list and I came in at 64! I didn’t even realise blog awards were a thing, and I use this blog mostly to document events and my own costumes so it’s not particularly useful all of the time.. so this is pretty neat! Thank you to everyone who visits!

Speaking of events, this weekend was my first of 2017: Rai-Con, Scotland’s Anime & Manga Convention! I was invited as a guest and as a judge to the event and after having such a great time last time I visited I was more than happy to come back. The event is so friendly and lively, it’s a great atmosphere!

I wore Prince Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura for the event – I did have another costume in the works but I didn’t have enough time to finish it before leaving. Booo! It was still a blast though, and I’ve not worn this costume much since C4 happened so it was nice to bring it out for another event!

It was an insanely busy day as we had a lot of entries to the competition – two rounds of judging and we ran over time a little bit! My judging partner in crime was Sketch McDraw, who has previously guested at Rai-Con and was awesome to hang out with during the day while we worked our way through the entries.

Because there were so many entries it was difficult to choose winners, because so many were so good!! There was an amazing level of craftsmanship and so many different techniques on show, it was a real toughie. Everyone did an incredible job. On that note, if anyone who did enter wants any feedback, please do feel free to contact me and I’ll be happy to go over what we thought.

Earlier in the day I hosted a talk, Preparing Costumes & Make-Up! Admittedly because of the busy morning I went back over some of the subjects in the talk a few times and babbled, but I really hope it was helpful for people in the audience listening.

The next Rai-Con is on October 28th – hope to see you all again soon!

Rai-Con Winter

October has been unexpectedly busy in a good way! I went up to Glasgow for Rai-Con, Scotland’s Anime & Manga Convention with Cosplex for a nice chilled weekend!

Rai-Con is ran by the same great team who runs Glasgow Comic Con which I visited earlier this year – after having such a nice time I figured it was worth popping along to their Japanese-centric event since it’s more up my alley! The schedule was packed – admittedly most of what I visited or was involved in was based around cosplay, but there were lots of talks, workshops, dealers, screenings – even a maid cafe! No matter where you went it was buzzing with things to see and do.

As you can see above, I debuted my new Leon Magnus costume here! It was a bit of a last-minute rush to get him finished, but I’m glad I did. I didn’t get many photos on the day, but I’ll be doing a shoot and roundup on him soon!

The cosplay guests this year were Nomes Cosplay, Sketch McDraw & Cosplay & Minney, pictured above with the competition winners! They hosted some great panels on the day and it was lovely to catch up with them all, too. The masquerade and competition were a huge success thanks to the lovely Aranel as always who was also lovely to see.

Both myself and Lex were there as special guests and we hosted a number of talks and workshops across the day! My first talk was Cosplay 101! ran by myself, covering some of the basics of cosplay; what it is, how to get involved, buying & making costumes and some advice on where to get supplies. It was surprisingly popular actually and I got lots of lovely comments from people afterwards wanting to get involved!

My second talk was World Cosplay Summit – A Cosplay Adventure! hosted by Cosplex (she represented the UK in both 2012 and 2016!), with some little bits of input from me! It was really informal and fun, with lots of pictures from our experiences in Japan and stories! Hopefully there’ll be some more people inspired to give it a go next year from our silly tales, it’s honestly such an amazing experience and I’d encourage anyone to give it a go!

On a personal note, I find the Scottish cosplay scene so different from England – it’s weird how a little bit of distance makes such a difference! People seem much more confident and friendly to talk to you, such a lovely atmosphere. The next Rai-Con is on March 4th 2017 – hopefully I’ll be back up then!

Glasgow Comic Con

From my last post where I had nothing on, things can change pretty quickly! This weekend I was up at Glasgow Comic Con to fill in as a guest judge on super short notice and had a blast.

I took two costumes, wearing Shallie from Atelier Shallie on the Saturday and then Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura on the Sunday. Neither of these are “comic” costumes so I felt a bit bad about that, but there were quite a few anime & manga costumes around so nobody seemed to mind! I was a guest alongside the insanely talented Cosplex and also got to hang out with the Cosplay Organiser across the whole weekend, Aranel!

The event itself was really chilled out, which makes a nice change! There were tons of comic guests, a dealers room and two artist alleys and loads of people in costume. The venue is great, too. I really liked how fluid it was, and while it was set out in a few different locations, they were all close enough to each other that it was easy to navigate and there was plenty of space to mingle. I had a lot of free time to explore the event and chat to people on both days which great!

I was a judge for the masquerade on both days and also for the C3 Cosplay Superstars competition on the Saturday – winners pictured above! The new champion is the incredible Samurai First Order from Star Wars (not sure of his name!), with the Forgemaster award going to Lady Shinjuku as The Morrigan from The Wicked + Divine and Fabricmaster award going to LovingLolisa as Rose Quartz from Steven Universe.

There was a big turnout on both days so we had our work cut out choosing winners! There were some incredible entries and some great techniques, with a mix of sewing, craft and armour across everyone’s costumes. The next event to compete in C3 is Rai-Con, which is a more anime & manga-centric event held in October where the next Cosplay Superstar will be decided!

Thank you to the wonderful team behind Glasgow Comic Con for making me feel so welcome despite stepping in last minute. Til next time!

AnimeCon 2016!

AnimeCon was last weekend and damn – what an adventure! This year I got to attend as a guest as part of Clara Cow’s Cosplay Cup with PopcornKuma where we represented the UK. Our costumes were Chii and Sumomo from Chobits!
